History

Baccarat was originally played in the town of Baccarat, in the Lorraine region of Eastern France. The game began to grow in popularity among the French aristocracy and was soon played by King Charles VIII and his noblemen.

The glassware used to make baccarat is made by heating the raw materials together in large furnaces. Once the raw ingredients have reached temperatures of over 1500 degrees Celsius, they are then blown or pulled into shape.

Glass is often engraved with a pattern using either a stone or copper grindstone, or acid engraving. This involves coating the surface of the object with a tough tar-like material which cuts away at the intended pattern.

In the 19th century, the firm Baccarat’s became famous for its spectacular displays at the Great Exhibitions of the time. Their work was so impressive that it caught the eye of visitors from far-flung places, including Portugal, Japan and India.
